I LOVE seasons and holidays, and one of my favorite things to do is to tie in learning opportunities with them. For the next couple of weeks I’ve planned several pumpkin themed days with my boys, taking a break from our regular curriculum on the days when my 3 year old is home and not in preschool. Today was so much fun!

We started off with some fall songs and rhymes. These were big hits with all three of my boys (ages 1, 3, and 5).

I’ve purchased the fall pack from The Measured Mom (one of my favorite bloggers) and picked a few things to do for today. These activities were fun and easy to put together.
Next we made pumpkins geoboards! Geoboards are wonderful tools for creating shapes, and the beauty of these is that the rubber bands can be taken off and the activity can be done an endless amount of times. I found this idea from Fun-A-Day. My boys had SO much fun pounding the golf tees into the pumpkin. Note: push pins can also be used, but the golf tees are less sharp and involve some hammering, which is always a hit!
We washed and dried our pumpkins first. I chose small pie-sized pumpkins for this activity, but any size would work. I allowed my kids to hammer their golf tees into any spot on the pumpkin they wanted. Then we stretched rubber bands over the tees, talking about shapes, sides, corners, etc. We practiced making a triangle into a square (or quadrilateral) by stretching the rubber band over another tee.
Materials needed:
- golf tees
- rubber mallet (a small hammer also works, but we found the mallet is so much easier)
- pumpkins
- rubber bands
Next we made pumpkin play-dough! You can use your favorite playdough recipe and add pumpkin pie spice to it. I used this recipe and added red and yellow food coloring to make orange.

While my kids played with the play dough I got dinner going in the crockpot – slow cooker coconut pumpkin curry! This is one of my favorite fall recipes, and so easy! Last fall my kids definitely ate it, so crossing my fingers it is still a hit a year later!
